SETTING THE SCENE: The seventh-seeded Milford High School baseball team is set to open OHSAA Tournament play on Tuesday, when the Eagles welcome Eastern Cincinnati Conference rival Withrow to town. The Eagles have been red hot as of late, having won eight of their last nine outings, winning a share of the ECC Championship along the way. Milford actually faced Withrow twice last week during the final week of the regular season, outscoring the Tigers by a 37-0 score in the meetings. After being held scoreless for the first two innings, Milford erupted for 14 runs over the final three frames to down Withrow by a 14-0 final. The Eagles plated four quick runs in the third, two coming on two-RBI triple by Calvin Hunter, then sent 11 hitters to the plate in the fourth and 10 in the fifth. The big hit of the fourth inning was a two-run double by Kyle Minton, while the fifth saw Milford take advantage of four walks and two Tigers’ errors.

Milford broke open a 4-2 game with a five-run, fifth inning outburst, helping the Eagles to their fifth straight win, an 11-4 victory over Western Brown. Eleven Eagles strode to the plate in the big inning, with a two-run single by Anthony Bassano starting the scoring. Senior Tyler Barter put the final nail in the coffin in the sixth with a two-run single for the final scores of the day.

Milford enjoyed a Senior Day to remember as the Eagles wrapped up a share of the 2018 Eastern Cincinnati Conference Championship with a bang, routing Withrow by a 23-0 score. The contest was never in doubt after the first inning as the Eagles nearly batted around twice on their way to an 11-inning explosion. On the hill, seniors Mitch Mierke, Jared Dettmer, Alex Lutz and Owen Elsbernd combined to twirl a one-hit shutout.

INSIDE THE ECC: A wild final week of the regular season saw Milford and Loveland share the 2018 ECC Championship. Needing a pair of wins over West Clermont for a piece of the title, Loveland did just that, while Milford knocked off Withrow twice to secure the title.

POLL WATCH: Milford took the No. 7 position in the final Cincinnati Enquirer Division I area coaches’ poll. Mason was crowned the regular season poll champions, earning all 18 first place votes. The balance of the top-five was comprised of Lakota East, Moeller, Elder and Badin. COLLEGE BOUND EAGLES: Four seniors on the 2018 Eagles’ roster have already announced their intention to continue their athletic and academic careers on the collegiate level. Twin brothers Alex and Dan Lutz are headed to Thiel College, while Mitch Mierke will take his talents to Thomas More College and Dylan Stewart has committed to Fort Wayne University.
